This is a remote study with no in-person study visits. Participate from the comfort of your home and help COVID research!
COVID-19 is an infectious respiratory viral disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. In the past two decades, this family of coronavirus had posed several major threats to global health when the original SARS-CoV epidemic emerged in 2002 and later, the MERS-CoV epidemic in 2012. Now, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten millions of lives worldwide.
TRANSMISSION. COVID-19 can be transmitted between persons before an infected individual starts developing symptoms. In some cases, an infected individual may develop mild to no symptoms at all but may still be infectious, causing them to spread the virus unknowingly to persons with whom they have close contact. The close contacts who are now exposed to COVID-19 can continue to spread the virus if they become infected but do not know that yet because they have not developed symptoms or remain non-symptomatic. This chain of transmission continues to spread in the community and in the case of SARS-CoV-2, resulted in a global pandemic.
ABOUT THE STUDY. This study will investigate how the immune system responds to the SARS-CoV-2 virus right after infection, before symptoms develop, and follow how the immune response changes over time throughout the infection. Historically, studying the immune response to a respiratory viral infection this early in the infection process and before someone develops symptoms has been extremely challenging since oftentimes testing for the virus is prompted only after symptoms developed. Thus, we are recruiting people who recently tested positive for COVID-19 (the index person) and their close contacts who may have been exposed to COVID-19 to volunteer and help us learn more about the early immune response to this virus.

- Complete a secure online survey about your close contacts who may have been exposed to COVID-19
- Complete a secure online survey about your symptoms and health

Study Participation
- Self- collect blood samples using a nearly pain-free home blood collection kit (homeRNA)
- Self-collect nasal swab samples using swabs with soft and comfortable tip
- Complete online surveys about your symptoms, health, and experience while collecting blood and swab samples with the study kits
